Facebook Places privacy tip

Discuss this article on Facebook | Posted by: ken pryde.

Facebook is about to launch a new feature, Facebook Places. This allows you to check-in similar to FourSquare, when visiting bars, restaurants, businesses or other locations. This announces to your friends where you are, and provides a history of how often you frequent locations.

Something like this should always be under your control, and by default, Facebook Places will make it possible for your friends to check you in when they are checking themselves into a location. Not good if you're somewhere you're not supposed to be and you want to stay incognito...

Here's how to adjust Facebook's privacy settings so only you can tag and check yourself into a location:
  1. Click on the Account tab in the top right corner
  2. Click Privacy Settings
  3. Click the small Customize Settings link
  4. On the next page, scroll to the Things Others Share section, and under "Friends can check me in to Places" select Disabled
This will put you in total control of tagging yourself in Facebook Places.
