Job description

Hours: 6:00am to 3:00pm

  • Develop at least two (2) full menus with recipes that will be incorporated into the current menu cycle (i.e. special dietary and/or nutritional restrictions)
  • Prepare cooking ingredients (chopping and peeling vegetables, cutting meat, etc.) and setup workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment
  • Cook food in various utensils or grillers, check, stir and turn food while cooking
  • Keep a sanitized and orderly environment in the kitchen
  • Clean and inspect equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas to ensure cleanliness and functional operation
  • Serve food using proper portion sizes and ensure great presentation by dressing dishes before they are served
  • Ensure all food and other items are stored properly; Check quality of ingredients
  • Monitor stock and place orders when there are shortages
  • Work collaboratively with all departments, including volunteers and external partners
  • Wash pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other cooking equipment
  • Assist with maintenance of the organic rooftop garden
  • Perform other kitchen duties as assigned

What you need to have

  • Must be able to prepare fresh meals from scratch (no boxed meals)
  • Must be self-motivated and organized, and able to take direction
  • Excellent team player with outstanding problem solving skills
  • Understanding and knowledge of safety, sanitation, and food handling procedures
  • Have a commitment to quality service, and have food and beverage knowledge
  • Must have strong English language communication skills in order to speak, read, and understand basic cooking directions
  • Ability to lift 40+lbs repeatedly throughout the day
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and withstand exposure to cold, heat, and water
Prior experience & qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required with at least 2 years prep or line cook experience
  • NYC Department of Health Certificate (NYC Food Handler certificate) is required
